Sector Emissions at a Glance
Buildings and transportation continue to be the largest emitting sectors in the GTHA
GTHA emissions are dominated by the building and transportation sectors, together making up over 80% of the region’s total emissions. Industrial emissions make up a further 13%, followed by waste (3%) and agriculture (1%).
Building emissions saw the largest increase in 2024, driven by a 28% rise in electricity-related emissions, equivalent to 9.8 megatonnes. Transportation emissions grew by 1%, while waste and agriculture emissions increased by 4% and 3%, respectively. Emissions from the industrial sector are estimated to have declined by 1%, reflecting reduced manufacturing activity in 2024.
Buildings
Total building emissions rose due to a large increase in gas-fired electricity generation.
