Toronto Total Emissions, 2018-2024
Total emissions increased by 1.2%, reaching 15.3 megatonnes and representing the highest total since 2015. The transportation sector was the main contributor to this rise, with a 2.7% increase.

Per capita emissions decreased by 3.8% to 4.9 tonnes of carbon per person.
Toronto 2024 Emissions by Sector
- The building sector represents 58% of total emissions in Toronto. Building emissions increased marginally (0.1%) in 2024.
- Natural gas consumption decreased across all sectors: residential (down 6%), commercial (down 4%) and industrial (down 3%).
- While electricity consumption increased by 2.2%, the rise of electricity emissions (nearly 28%) was primarily driven by the increase in carbon intensity of the provincial grid.
- Toronto saw a moderate rise of 32% in electric vehicle registrations in 2024, with 26,853 EVs (up 29%) and 9,287 PHEVs (up 43%).
- In 2024, ridership on the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) agency increased by 6%.
- Scope 3 aviation emissions at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport decreased by 18% from 77,139 tonnes (2023) to 63,605 tonnes (2024). These aviation emissions, however, are not solely attributable to Toronto, as Billy Bishop serves passengers from the entire region.
Spotlight in Toronto
- City of Toronto amended their apartment building zoning bylaw to enable the installation of new cladding systems on existing buildings and significantly improve energy performance.
- Toronto Hydro launched an electrical load capacity map for neighborhoods across the City. The map shows available substation and feeder capacities down to the neighbourhood level as well as key information for electrification efforts.
- Toronto broke ground on the Western North York Community Recreation & Child CareCentre, one of its first net-zero aquatic facilities.
- The Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN) received $8 million in federal funding to establish two pilot zones in Toronto & Windsor/Sarnia for zero-emission and autonomous vehicle testing.
