York Region Total Emissions, 2018-2024
Total emissions increased by 1%, exceeding 8 Mt and nearly reaching 2019 levels. The building sector was the main driver of this increase (up 1.6%).
York Region Per Capita Emissions, 2018-2024
Per capita emissions decreased by 2%, reaching 6.4 tonnes of carbon per person.
York Region 2024 Emissions by Sector
- Natural gas consumption in the region decreased over 4%, mainly due to a warmer winter (2024 had 3% fewer heating degree days). Reductions were observed across the residential (down 6%), commercial (down 2%), and industrial (down 1%) building sectors.
- Electricity consumption increased by 4.6%, the highest increase across the GTHA. Along with the considerable rise in the carbon intensity of the provincial electricity grid, electricity emissions increased by nearly 31%.
- Transportation emissions had a marginal change (up 0.3%).
- York saw a moderate rise of 37% in total electric vehicle registrations compared to 2023, with 25,994 EVs (up 36%) and 6,156 PHEVs (up 41%).
- In 2024, York Region Transit saw a 12% increase in ridership.

- Transportation emissions are now the primary source of emissions across most municipalities in York Region. This is a shift from 2023 trends. However, in Markham, Newmarket, and Aurora, buildings continue to be the largest source of emissions.
- Natural gas emissions decreased across all cities by an average of 4%, largely due to a milder winter. Newmarket (down 7%) and Richmond Hill (down 6%) had the largest decreases.
- Transportation emissions increased in Whitchurch-Stouffville (up 5%), Georgina (up 3%), and King and Richmond Hill (up 2%). In contrast, emissions decreased in Newmarket (down 5%), Aurora (down 4%), East Gwillimbury (down 1%). Vaughan's transportation emissions changed minimally.
- York Region saw an increase of 37% in total electric vehicle registrations compared to 2023. East Gwillimbury led with a considerable 48% growth, followed by Whitchurch-Stouffville (43%), Georgina (42%), and Aurora (39%).
Spotlight in York
- York Region advanced its Integrated Waste Management Master Plan, achieving 92% of waste diverted from landfills and exceeding targets.
- York Region broke ground on a $490 million biofuel facility (Convertus York) in East Gwillimbury. This will be the first biofuel plant in Canada to integrate CO2 liquefaction technology and is expected to process 200,000 tonnes of organic waste annually to heat 5,000 homes.
- Equinix TR5 data centre partnered with Markham District Energy to use surplus heat for swimming pools, York University's new Markham campus, local businesses and 9,000 homes.
- City of Vaughan and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority are supporting homeowners through the Sustainable Neighbourhood Action Program (SNAP) Home Retrofit Pilot. Supports include free home retrofit coaching and rebates for home upgrades like window/door replacement, air sealing, heat pump and rain barrel installations.
- The Town of Georgina approved their Climate Action Plan which included actions to advocate for EV readiness requirements in the Ontario Building Code and investigate EV charging infrastructure requirements for parking lots.
