Regional Emissions at a Glance
Total carbon emissions increased in all regions except Peel.
Total carbon emissions increased slightly in all regions but Peel, where emissions declined slightly. The overall increase underscores the ongoing challenges municipalities face to stay on track with their climate goals.
Transportation and buildings remain the two highest-emitting sectors in nearly all regions. The City of Hamilton is an exception, where the sizeable steel manufacturing sector makes industrial emissions the largest contributor. Cement production in Durham and Peel, along with agriculture in Durham, also contribute considerably to their respective regional emissions.
Per capita emissions decreased across all regions, with the exception of Halton. Peel had the largest decrease over the last year (nearly 5%) followed by the City of Toronto (nearly 4%). Toronto also continues to have the lowest per capita emissions, decreasing to just under 5 tonnes per person.
