Buildings and transportation continue to be the largest emitting sectors in the GTHA

GTHA emissions are dominated by the building and transportation sectors, together making up over 80% of the region’s total emissions. Industrial emissions make up a further 14%, followed by waste (3%) and agriculture (1%).

While the buildings sector generated the most emissions in the GTHA (45%), it was also the only sector which saw a decrease from 2022. A 0.6% reduction in building emissions is attributed to a decline in natural gas consumption, which was largely attributable to a warmer winter. All other sector emissions increased, with transportation up 5%, industry up 3%, waste up 3% and agriculture up 3%.
