Proven, ready-to-deploy climate actions that "multi-solve."

Success Story: In 2024, the Government of Canada released EV purchase incentives and the Electric Vehicle Availability Standard. The EV standard alone is projected to result in cumulative carbon reduction impacts estimated at 430 megatonnes, and health benefits measuring $90 billion.

01

Enact the Clean Electricity Regulations to ensure a net-zero grid.

Sector: Electricity

Ensure the forthcoming Clean Electricity Regulations:

  • Limit the role of emitting generation to that of a “last resort” resource.
  • Maintain strong and stringent guardrails that will limit emissions and establish a clear pathway to a net-zero grid.
  • Provide clear regulatory signal to deter investment in new gas-fired power generation.

Impacts

Removing gas from the electricity system supports economy-wide electrification and reduces the health impacts of fossil fuel extraction, transmission, and combustion. A robust CER will help avoid stranded assets.

02

Invest in electric vehicle adoption and infrastructure.

Sector: Transportation

Priority Actions

  • Provide incentives for EV chargers, and for comprehensive EV-ready planning and retrofits in existing multi-family buildings.
  • Finalize the medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicle standard.

Impacts

Prioritizing EV-ready multifamily buildings will avoid the costs of retrofitting them in the future, and create more access to EV charging.   Electrifying medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicles would have significant health, air quality, and carbon reduction benefits.

03

Restrict the use of gas-fired heating equipment

Sector: Buildings

Priority Actions

  • Update Canada’s Appliance and Equipment Standards to progressively phase out the sale of new gas-fired equipment.

Impacts

Ending the use of natural gas for heating and cooking would have significant health benefits for Canadians and dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Some studies estimate that gas stoves increase child asthma rates by 13%.
